GPA Calculator
Enter each course's letter grade and credit hours to get your GPA on the standard US 4.0 scale.
How to calculate your GPA
Your GPA is a credit-weighted average of your grade points. A 4-credit course counts more than a 1-credit course, so the formula multiplies each course's grade points by its credits before averaging.
GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) ÷ Σ(credits).
4.0 scale
- A+ / A = 4.0 · A- = 3.7
- B+ = 3.3 · B = 3.0 · B- = 2.7
- C+ = 2.3 · C = 2.0 · C- = 1.7
- D+ = 1.3 · D = 1.0 · D- = 0.7 · F = 0.0
Weighted vs unweighted GPA
This calculator gives an unweightedGPA: every class sits on the same 4.0 scale, so an A is a 4.0 whether it's gym or AP Chemistry. Many high schools also report a weighted GPA that adds a bonus for harder courses, commonly +1.0 for AP or IB and +0.5 for Honors, which is how students end up above a 4.0. Not every school uses the same bonus (some give +0.5 for AP and +0.3 for Honors), so your transcript is the source of truth.
Why colleges may see a different number
Admissions offices often recalculate GPA to compare applicants fairly. A common move is to strip the weighting back out, count only core academic courses (math, science, English, social studies, world languages), and drop electives like PE. The University of California, for instance, caps weighted GPA at 5.0 and counts only approved AP, IB, and dual-enrollment classes. So three numbers can all honestly be "your GPA": your school's unweighted, your school's weighted, and a college's recalculated version.
Repeated courses and cumulative GPA
Most districts roll all of 9th through 12th grade into one cumulative GPA, and that full record is what your transcript shows. Retake policies vary: some schools replace the old grade, others average both attempts. If you retook a class, enter the grade your transcript actually counts.
Frequently asked questions
- How is GPA calculated?
- Each letter grade maps to grade points (A = 4.0, B = 3.0, and so on). Multiply each course's points by its credits, add them up, and divide by total credits: Σ(points × credits) ÷ Σ(credits).
- What scale do you use?
- The standard unweighted US 4.0 scale with +/- steps: A/A+ = 4.0, A- = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0, down to F = 0.0.
- Does this do weighted (honors/AP) GPA?
- This is unweighted GPA. Weighted GPA adds bonus points for honors/AP courses and varies by school, so we keep the standard scale here.
- Why is my GPA different on my college applications?
- Many colleges recalculate: they often remove course weighting and count only core academic classes so every applicant is on one scale. Your school's weighted number and a college's recalculated number can both be correct.
