AP Precalculus is a relatively new course, and the exam is more about modeling and reasoning across function families than memorizing identities. It tests three units, polynomial and rational, exponential and logarithmic, and trigonometric and polar functions, while the fourth unit isn't on the exam. You move constantly between graphs, tables, equations, and words, which is the real skill being graded.
Inside the AP Precalculus exam
Section I is 40 multiple-choice questions: Part A is 28 without a calculator (80 minutes) and Part B is 12 with a graphing calculator (40 minutes), together 62.5% of the score. Section II is four free responses in 60 minutes (37.5%): two with a calculator, two without. The four tasks are Function Concepts, Modeling a Non-Periodic Context, Modeling a Periodic Context, and Symbolic Manipulations. You answer multiple choice in Bluebook and handwrite the free response on paper.
How the AP Precalculus score is calculated
AP Precalculus combines these sections into one composite out of 100:
- Multiple choice: out of 40, weighted 63% of the composite.
- Free response: out of 24, weighted 37% of the composite.

How to squeeze out more points
- Practice moving between representations. A function can appear as a graph, a table, an equation, or a description, and questions often hand you one and ask about another.
- Learn the two modeling free responses. One asks you to model a non-periodic situation (often exponential or polynomial) and one a periodic situation (sinusoidal); both want you to build and use a function, not just name it.
- Know your calculator section cold. Part B multiple choice and two free responses allow a calculator, so practice regression and equation solving to be fast where it's permitted.
- Be precise with symbolic work. The Symbolic Manipulations free response rewards clean algebra with function rules, so show each step rather than jumping to the answer.
Where students lose points
- Studying Unit 4. The fourth unit (functions involving parameters, vectors, and matrices) is taught but not assessed on the exam, so center your review on Units 1 to 3.
- Weak no-calculator algebra. Most of the multiple choice and half the free response ban the calculator, so rusty by-hand work shows up fast.
- Describing a model instead of building it. The modeling questions want an actual function you then use, not a sentence about what kind it is.
- Sloppy domain and notation. Function notation, domain restrictions, and units in a modeling context are routine points students drop.
