AP Physics C: Electricity and Magnetism is the most calculus-heavy AP physics exam and usually the smallest, taken mostly by students who've already done Mechanics. It runs from electrostatics through circuits to induction, and it leans hard on integration: you set up integrals for fields and potentials, and you use Gauss's law to turn symmetric problems into algebra.

Inside the AP Physics C: E&M exam

Section I is 40 multiple-choice questions in 80 minutes (50%). Section II is four free responses in 100 minutes (50%), worth 10, 12, 10, and 8 points. The content covers electrostatics, Gauss's law, conductors and capacitors, electric circuits, magnetic fields, and electromagnetic induction. As of 2025 it has its own testing session, separate from Mechanics.

How to squeeze out more points

  • Reach for Gauss's law when there's symmetry. For spheres, cylinders, and planes it turns a hard field integral into simple algebra, and it's a frequent free-response setup.
  • Set up the integral even when it's messy. Finding a field or potential from a charge distribution is integration, and the correct setup earns substantial credit even if the evaluation is rough.
  • Know RC and RL circuit behavior. Charging and discharging, and the difference between the instant a switch flips and the steady state, are recurring questions.
  • Practice induction carefully. Faraday's and Lenz's laws, and the direction of an induced current, are conceptually slippery and heavily tested.

Where students lose points

  • Weak integration. More than any other AP physics exam, this one is impossible with shaky calculus, since the fields and potentials are integrals.
  • Using Gauss's law where there's no symmetry. It only simplifies symmetric charge distributions; forcing it elsewhere wastes time.
  • Getting induced-current direction wrong. Lenz's law takes practice; state the flux change first, then the current that opposes it.
  • Writing only the answer. As everywhere in AP physics, the setup and reasoning carry most of the rubric.

A worked example
