Final Grade Calculator
Enter your current grade, the overall grade you want, and how much your final is worth — and see the exact score you need on the final.
Doable, but you'll need a strong final. Time to study.
How the final grade calculator works
Your course grade is a weighted average. Everything you've done so far makes up one slice, and the final exam makes up another slice equal to its weight. To hit a target overall grade, you only need to solve for the final:
Needed on final = (Target − Current × (1 − Weight)) ÷ Weight, where Weight is the final's share written as a decimal (a 20% final → 0.20).
Example
Say you have an 88% going in, you want a 90%, and the final is worth 20%. You'd need (90 − 88 × 0.8) ÷ 0.2 = 98% on the final. Knowing that number up front tells you how hard to push.
Tips
- Check your syllabus for the final's exact weight. It changes the answer a lot.
- If the number is intimidating, compute what you'd need for the next grade down too, so you have a realistic floor.
- Use the weighted grade calculator first if you're not sure of your current grade.
What "more than 100%" is telling you
If the result comes back as 105, or 130, the math isn't broken. It means your target is out of reach from the final alone: the exam carries only its own slice of the grade, and once the gap is wider than that slice can close, no score fills it. When that happens, aim at the next grade band instead, and check whether test corrections, late work, or a redo policy could lift your current grade before the final even starts.
When you've already locked it in
A zero or negative result is the happy opposite: you've banked enough that even a 0 on the final keeps you at or above your target. That's useful when you're juggling several finals and deciding where your study hours actually matter. One caveat for both cases: this assumes the final is a single weighted slice. If your syllabus drops your lowest test or folds the final into a larger category, your real number can shift, so trust your course's own weights over a round figure.
Frequently asked questions
- How do you calculate the grade I need on the final?
- We solve the weighted-average formula for the final. Your current grade counts for (100% − final weight), and the final counts for its weight. Needed = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w, where w is the final's weight as a decimal.
- What if it says I need more than 100%?
- That means your target isn't reachable from the final alone — the math needs an impossible score. Aim for the next grade band, or ask your teacher about extra credit or grade replacement.
- What if the result is negative or zero?
- You've already locked in your target — even a 0 on the final keeps you at or above the grade you want.
- Is my current grade the same as my average?
- Use your current overall course grade (the running percentage before the final). If your syllabus groups work into categories, use the overall percentage those categories produce.
- My final is two exams, or it replaces my lowest test. Does this still work?
- Use it for the common case where the final is one weighted slice. If the final is split across two sittings, add their weights together. If it replaces a lower grade, this calculator won't capture that rule, so check with your teacher.
