AP Physics 1 was redesigned for 2025, and the changes matter. Fluids moved over from Physics 2 as a new unit, the old multi-select multiple choice is gone, and the free response now comes in four fixed types. The exam rewards written reasoning as much as algebra, and the 2025 curve was unusually friendly: the pass rate jumped from 47% to 66%, the biggest one-year gain of any AP exam.

Inside the AP Physics 1 exam

Three hours. Section I is 40 multiple-choice questions in 80 minutes (50%), all now single-answer with four choices. Section II is four free responses in 100 minutes (50%), one of each type: Mathematical Routines, Translation Between Representations, Experimental Design and Analysis, and Qualitative/Quantitative Translation, worth 10, 12, 10, and 8 points. Expect a fluids question, since the new Unit 8 is 10 to 15% of the exam.

How the AP Physics 1 score is calculated

AP Physics 1: Algebra-Based combines these sections into one composite out of 100:

  • Multiple choice: out of 40, weighted 50% of the composite.
  • Free response: out of 40, weighted 50% of the composite.

How to squeeze out more points

  • Write the reasoning, not just the formula. The newer free-response types reward a clear explanation of why, so a sentence connecting your equation to the physics often earns more than the final number.
  • Drill the experimental design question. One free response is always about designing or analyzing an experiment: naming variables, describing a procedure, reading data. Those are predictable points if you practice them.
  • Know fluids cold. Buoyancy and Archimedes' principle, plus Bernoulli and the continuity equation (faster flow in a narrower pipe), show up often now that fluids is a full unit.
  • Carry units and define your symbols. Algebra-based or not, dropped units and undefined variables cost easy points across every question.

Where students lose points

  • Giving a number with no explanation. The redesigned free responses are built around reasoning, so an unjustified answer leaves most of the points on the table.
  • Skipping the fluids unit. It used to live in Physics 2, so older review books underweight it, but it's now 10 to 15% of the exam.
  • Rushing the experimental design question. Vague procedures like "measure it and record" don't earn the design points; name the variables and the steps.
  • Studying from pre-2025 practice tests. They have multi-select questions and a different free-response style that no longer match the exam.

A worked example
