AP Physics C: Mechanics covers the same mechanics topics as Physics 1 but with calculus, and that's the whole point: position, velocity, and acceleration are derivatives and integrals of each other, and the exam expects you to use that. For 2025 it became its own exam session with a longer format. It's narrower than Physics 1 but deeper, and it assumes you're taking calculus alongside it.

Inside the AP Physics C: Mechanics exam

Section I is 40 multiple-choice questions in 80 minutes (50%). Section II is four free responses in 100 minutes (50%), worth 10, 12, 10, and 8 points. The content spans kinematics, Newton's laws, work and energy, momentum, rotational motion, oscillations, and gravitation, all with calculus. As of the 2025 redesign, Mechanics has its own dedicated testing session rather than sharing one with Electricity and Magnetism.

How to squeeze out more points

  • Use calculus language on the free response. Write the integral or derivative even if you approximate the result; a correct setup, like impulse as the integral of force over time, often earns most of the credit.
  • Know the kinematic relationships as calculus. Velocity is the derivative of position and the integral of acceleration; questions routinely hand you one and ask for another.
  • Don't neglect rotation. Rotational kinematics, torque, moment of inertia, and angular momentum are a large slice of the exam and a common free response.
  • Keep your basic calculus sharp. Weak integration on test day turns otherwise straightforward problems into dead ends.

Where students lose points

  • Avoiding the calculus and reaching for constant-acceleration formulas. Those shortcuts fail when acceleration varies, which is exactly what the exam tests.
  • Writing only a final answer. Like all AP physics, the rubric rewards the setup and method, so show the integral or the free-body diagram.
  • Skipping the free-body diagram. Many mechanics problems start with one, and leaving it out loses easy points and invites sign errors.
  • Sign errors in energy and momentum. A quick note to check signs saves careless points.
